Explain Tokenization to fresher

In Generative AI, models like ChatGPT, Gemini don’t read text as letters or words like humans do.
They break it into chunks called tokens, which are just numbers the model can understand.
So, In digital world all is numbers, Computers work with numbers, not letters.
Imagine you are a tourist in a foreign country.
You meet a local who wants to help you — maybe show you around, tell you stories, or answer your questions.
There’s just one problem:
You don’t speak their language
They don’t speak yours
So, what do you do?
You get a translator.
This translator listens to your words, breaks them into small, understandable bits, and changes them into the local language so the person can understand.
This translator’s job is tokenization.
